How to Align to God's Will

How to Align to God's Will

Sometimes God will shake up your world in order for us to align with His will. In mid-August 2022, God did just that. I hopped onto a Microsoft Teams meeting at 8:00 AM, and within minutes, my family’s world was turned upside down. My remote job was going hybrid, and the options were to relocate to Michigan or resign in two weeks.

Needless to say, when those words left her mouth, I was numb. What was I going to do? Obviously, moving to Michigan was out of the question. As a wife, a mother of two, and a homeowner, there was no way I was uprooting my family when I live in a city like Atlanta that is saturated with jobs.

So, I did what most professionals do: I ended my Teams meeting and logged into LinkedIn. Our God is so funny. As soon as I opened the app, there it was—a direct message from a recruiter about a hybrid position right here in Atlanta.

Over the next two weeks, I had so many interviews with various companies that I was quite literally overwhelmed from juggling the schedule. I talked to more recruiters over the last month than I have in my entire career.

After contemplating a new position in the prior months, I had passively applied on occasion but never received a response. Eventually, I started praying, "God, if it is Your will that I move, then please confirm it to me." There were people close to me encouraging me to step out and find something new, but I decided that I did not want to be led by emotion and culture anymore.

I will never go back to who I was before I gave my life to Christ again in 2014—that career-driven girl who wanted everything society says you should have but didn't have God. The "new me" seeks to serve God, to proclaim the salvation granted through Jesus Christ, and to be led by the Holy Spirit.

She landed her dream job with the company from that original direct message. Not because she’s more qualified or connected than others, but because the God she serves said, "This is My will." The truth is, there is nothing wrong with wanting a better life, but I will never seek "better" over God. It’s not worth it to me.

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t get it right all the time. But I do have a process to help keep my desires in check.

How to Align with God’s Will

  • Always check your motives. When you need to make a decision, ask yourself questions to ensure your intentions are pure. Do you want this because you see someone else with it, because the world says you should, or because you believe this is what God has for you?

  • Pray about it. Prayer will help you align yourself with God’s will. In your prayers, always ask that God’s will prevail over your own desires. Ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit so that you may be guided by Him.

  • Seek God’s wisdom. Search for biblical truths related to your current situation. I also recommend finding scriptures to stand on during prayer.

Document Your Journey

When you are in the middle of a "God-shake," it is so important to get your prayers out of your head and onto paper. I love using our Daily Prayer Notepads for this. They are perfect for jotting down those quick petitions and the scriptures you’re standing on while you wait for God to move.

  • Daily Prayer Notepads: These notepads are an accessible way to keep your prayer life consistent, even on those busy days when you're juggling busy schedules, kids activities, or big life decisions.
